Support Unity 101 and vote now in the National Diversity Awards

We are proud to announce that Unity 101 Community Radio has been nominated for the National Diversity Awards, in the category of Community Organisation for Race/Religion/Faith, as supporters believe that Unity 101 has positively contributed to community cohesion in Southampton.

Receiving our permanent community radio licence 9 years ago, Unity 101 is run by volunteers of diverse cultures & faiths, providing culturally relevant output to engage, motivate, inform, inspire, entertain & educate.

Unity 101 also provides a range of opportunities for local people, such as work experience & confidence building through volunteering both in & out of the studio, and including five local schools and colleges. The station has been responsible for much ethnic integration in Southampton, for breaking down negative stereotypes and making positive links between ethnic, faith groups & other mainstream organisations.

In 2012, Unity 101’s work was recognised & celebrated at the highest level when it received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for “promoting community cohesion through a multi language broadcasting service”. In 2013, Unity 101 presenter, Veronica Gordon of the Vibrant Vibes radio show, was awarded the national BEFFTA Radio Personality of the Year, beating stiff competition from across the UK.

Ram Kalyan Kelly, Project & Station Manager, Unity 101 Community Radio: “We are delighted to have been nominated for the National Diversity Award, however there is still a long way to go in order to be in with a chance of winning. To make the short list we need as many votes as possible so we’re asking people to vote for us if they believe that Unity 101 shows great devotion to our community and is contributing to more equality, diversity and inclusion in our City.”
