We’re getting ready to start 2017 in style – we’re planning our 11th anniversary celebrations!
Did you know Unity 101 is the leading and longest running community-run radio station in the south? And! We’re already down in British history for being one of the first community radio stations to be granted a community radio licence by Ofcom back in 2005.
So, back to our celebations, we’re expecting hundreds to us on the first Saturday of 2017 to celebrate our milestone. Project and Station Manager, Ram Kalyan “Kelly” said: “As a community radio station, we want everyone to enjoy our birthday with us. So we’ve hired a huge hall and are laying on an entire day and evening of celebrations!”
Taking place at the Central Hall, the day will start with a free Cultural Fusion family funday – full of entertainment including African drummers and Bollywood dancers; and ethnic foods, including a cookery demonstration by Shelina Permalloo, former Master Chef winner and owner of the city’s Lakaz Maman Mauritian restaurant.
As day turns to night, the second hall will be turned into a spectacular Bollywood concert, welcoming many more people to the venue. As well as UK-wide professional musicians and singers, local musicians – the Unity 101 Collective Band – will also take to the stage, singing pop songs in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Gujarati.
Ram Kalyan “Kelly” said: “While the daytime event is free, we have to sell tickets for the concert, to go towards the cost of hiring the hall for the day and the performers. We’ve also been sponsored by local businesses and, as a voluntary organisation, we’re extremely grateful for their support. Tickets are selling well so far and we’re really looking forward to it!”
