The exhibition is presented by a group of volunteers from Chinese Association of Southampton.

Chinese people came to live in Southampton city over 100 years ago. They came from all over the world including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Malay, Singapore and Taiwan. Chinese people used to work in laundry and catering business. Today, you can find Chinese people working in variety of professions, including police force, law and accountancy firms, banking corporations, medical and public services. However, they don’t forget their root where their parents came from.

The Chinese Association of Southampton (CAS) brings the community together and also promotes Chinese art, culture and traditions to the public. As a result, groups of CAS members decided to bring the main festivals to ‘Unity Art’ to show to the citizens of Southampton about our culture.

Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival is according to the lunar calendar, on the 15th day of the 8th month. It is the second grandest festival in China after the Chinese New Year. It takes its name from the fact that it is always celebrated in the middle of the autumn season. The day is also known as the Moon Festival, as at that time of the year the moon is at its roundest and brightest. Chinese people will get together to celebrate it by eating moon cakes and round fruit and vegetables.

Chinese New Year is the most important Chinese festival celebrated by all Chinese community around the world. In Ancient times, Chinese people believed that a monster called Nian was coming to kill villagers and destroy property at the beginning of the New Year. The only way to scare Nian is to use red papers and set off firecracker. Since then, Red became the main colour during the Chinese Year.

They are students from local school and university, accountants, a retired police officer, nurses and housewives.
