Here’s who donated to help make Southampton’s ‘Tree of Light’ shine bright

On December 1 hundreds of sponsored lights will illuminate Woolstone Millenium Garden as part of Communicare’s Tree of Light Campaign.

The campaign, run by Communicare, a charity dedicated to eradicating loneliness, has taken place in Southampton for the past ten years.

The sponsored lights will commemorate lost loved ones and the money raised will help Communicare continue its work in the city.

Communicare recruits volunteers who provide practical and emotional support to those experiencing loneliness.

The switch-on will take place at 5pm preceded by Christmas Carols under the tree at 4.30pm.

Cath Mcdermid became a Communicare volunteer earlier this year after reading about their befriending scheme in The Daily Echo.

Ever since then she has been visiting Barbra Reed, 82, once a week with her 7 month year old son Dylan.

Cath said: “I decided to become a volunteer when I was going on maternity leave.

“I care for children as my job and I wanted to do something to give back and help someone while I was off of work.

“Me and Barbra hit it off from the start.

Barbra who has 8 children and 46 grandchildren and great grandchildren said: “I love Cath she is like one of my daughters.”

Cath said: “I come from a big family but I don’t like the thought of anyone being lonely.

“My friends have signed up to Communicare since I have joined.”
