Introducing UNITY ARTS – a new community arts hub for Southampton

Southampton Community radio station Unity 101 is celebrating their new creative arts space for the community in Southampton. Unity Arts is based at the Unity 101 studios in St Mary’s Rd, Southampton and will bring local people together through art exhibitions, spoken words events and projects.

The gallery is opening with an exhibition celebrating the Windrush Generation of West Indians in Southampton. Members of that community are now in their 80s and Unity Arts’ artists Catherine Wright & Tori Green have worked with them to create a photographic exhibition.

The exhibition also features audio of West Indian elders sharing stories of what HOME means to them.

Station Manager Ram Kalyan said “Unity 101 is all about bringing people together so Unity Arts projects are a natural extension of our creative work on air. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to see the work our artists working in the community”.

Unity Arts curator Catherine Wright said “Working with the elders at the Priory Road lunch club has been wonderful and I’m looking forward to creating art with local people of Punjabi and Pakistani heritage over the next few months”.

These fantastic exhibitions are free to all during Unity 101 studio opening times 10am to 6pm.at 107 St Mary’s Rd, Southampton SO14 OAN.
